Local SEO Services in Canada

Canadian local search looks American at first glance and behaves differently in practice: its own directories, postal codes, two official languages and long distances between service areas.

Our office is in Amritsar, India, and we work with businesses in Canada entirely online, at the same one-time prices as everywhere else.

How local search works in Canada

Canadians search by city and neighbourhood and use a mix of American and British vocabulary: realtor, contractor, lawyer, physiotherapist. Spelling leans British (“colour”, “centre”) with American exceptions (“tire”).

In Quebec, customers search in French, and the law requires French to be present and prominent in commercial communication. A Quebec business needs French content, not an English page with a translation plugin.

Outside the big cities, service areas are large. A trade business may cover several towns an hour apart, which makes accurate service areas and a few well-made location pages more valuable.

Citations, addresses and rules in Canada

Listings and directories worth having

  • Google Business Profile, Apple Maps and Bing Places
  • Yellow Pages Canada (YP.ca) and Canada411
  • HomeStars for home services
  • Yelp and Facebook
  • The Better Business Bureau, and RateMDs for healthcare

Accuracy matters more than volume. A dozen correct listings do more than hundreds of automated ones. See how local citations work.

Name, address and phone format

Use the postal code in its standard format with a space, such as M5V 2T6, the two-letter province code, and a ten-digit number with area code. Keep bilingual versions of the business name consistent wherever both appear.

Rules to be aware of

PIPEDA governs personal information nationally, with provincial laws in Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia. Canada’s anti-spam law, CASL, requires consent for commercial emails, which affects how enquiry form contacts may be used. Quebec’s language law affects websites and signage.

This is general information, not legal advice. Check the rules that apply to your business.
