Getting found on Google

The questions that bring most owners here in the first place.

How do I rank my business on Google?

Complete and verify your Google Business Profile, choose the most accurate primary category, list every service, keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere, ask every customer for a review, and connect the profile to a website that confirms the same details. That covers both the map results and the ordinary results beneath them. Our local SEO guide for small businesses walks through it in order.

Why is my business not showing up on Google Maps?

Usually one of five things: the profile was never verified, the primary category is wrong, the service area is set too wide or too narrow, your details do not match across the web, or the profile is thinner than your competitors’.

There is also a factor nobody controls, which is distance. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence together, so a sparse listing nearby can lose to a complete one further away. See how to rank higher on Google Maps.

What is the Google Map Pack?

It is the block of map results, usually three, that appears at the top of a local search above the ordinary links. Each listing has a call button and directions, so people often act on it without visiting a website. Listings below the pack sit behind a “More places” link. Our Google Maps SEO page explains how positions are decided.

How does “near me” SEO work?

A “near me” search tells Google to find the most relevant open business close to the searcher. You do not rank for it by writing “near me” on your pages. You rank by being accurately located, clearly described and well reviewed. More in how to rank for near me searches.

Why do my competitors rank higher when their reviews are worse?

Rating is one signal among several. Competitors often win on proximity to the searcher, a better-matched primary category, a fuller profile, more reviews in total, or a stronger website. A business with a lower rating, many more reviews and every field completed will often outrank a five-star profile with a handful of reviews.

Can I rank in a city where I do not have an address?

In the Map Pack, rarely, because proximity counts for too much. The realistic route is ordinary search: a real page on your website for each place you serve, with specific content about your work there. Copying one page many times with the city name swapped does not work and can harm the whole site.

What if I am a service-area business with no storefront?

Hide the address and set service areas. That is the correct setup for trades, mobile services and home-based businesses. Google still needs a real address for verification, but it will not be shown. Keep the areas realistic. Google allows up to 20 service areas and says the overall area should not stretch much beyond about two hours’ drive from your base.

Google Business Profile

Setup, verification and suspensions.

What is Google Business Profile SEO?

It is the work of completing and correcting your Google Business Profile so that Google can match it to the right searches: categories, services, description, hours, attributes, photos, posts and reviews. It also includes making sure other sites list your details the same way. This is what our Google Business Profile optimization service delivers.

How do I verify my Google Business Profile?

Depending on category and country, Google offers verification by video, phone, email or postcard. Video is now common. It works best as one unbroken recording that shows your signage or premises, your equipment or stock, and proof that you manage the business. Plan the walk-through before you press record.

Why was my Google Business Profile suspended, and can I get it back?

Common triggers are keywords added to the business name, a virtual office or an address that does not match reality, a category that does not fit the business, duplicate listings, or a sudden burst of suspicious reviews. Most suspensions can be appealed. Fix the underlying problem first, then submit documents such as a utility bill, licence or registration with the appeal.

Do Google posts and photos affect ranking?

Mostly indirectly. Fresh photos and regular posts encourage clicks, calls and direction requests, and a profile with only old photos can look closed to customers. Treat them as signs of an active business, not as a ranking trick.

Will changing my business name or address hurt my ranking?

It can, temporarily. A move changes your position relative to searchers and often triggers re-verification. A name change has to be updated everywhere the old one appears or you create conflicting data. Both are manageable when the profile, website and citations are updated together.

Can I do all of this myself?

A good deal of it, yes. Claim and verify the profile, choose the right primary category, fill in every field, add real photos, list your services and ask for reviews. Our guide on how to optimize a Google Business Profile covers it step by step. Owners usually get stuck on category strategy, citation cleanup and building a website that ranks.

Citations, NAP and what moves rankings

Signals worth your attention, and a few that get overrated.

How do I rank higher on Google Maps?

Set the most accurate primary category, add relevant secondary ones, list every service with a real description, add genuine photos regularly, earn reviews steadily and reply to them, keep your details identical everywhere, and link to a website that confirms the same information. None of it is exotic. Few businesses finish the list.

What is NAP consistency?

NAP stands for name, address and phone number. Google compares yours across your profile, your website and the directories that mention you. Conflicting versions, such as an old number or a previous trading name, reduce confidence in the listing. See local citations and NAP consistency explained.

What are local citations?

A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number on another site: directories, map services, industry bodies, chambers of commerce. They help confirm that you exist where you say you do. Accuracy matters far more than volume.

What is the difference between local SEO and regular SEO?

Regular SEO competes for national or global searches and leans on content and links. Local SEO competes for searches tied to a place and leans on your profile, proximity, reviews and local relevance. For a business that serves customers in person, local SEO is usually the faster and cheaper route.

Is SEO better than Google Ads for a local business?

They do different jobs. Ads deliver traffic immediately and stop when the budget stops. Local SEO takes weeks to build and keeps working afterwards. Running ads to an unverified or half-finished profile wastes money, so the sensible order is to fix the profile and site first.

How do I track whether local SEO is working?

Watch the numbers tied to money: calls from the profile, direction requests, website clicks from the listing and enquiries through the site. Google Business Profile performance data and Search Console cover most of it for free. A single ranking position is misleading because results change with the searcher’s location.

Reviews

The asset most businesses neglect, and the easiest one to damage.

How important are reviews for local SEO?

Very. Google says review count and rating feed into local ranking, and customers read reviews before they call. Recency and steadiness matter as much as the total. Read how reviews affect local SEO for what to do about it.

How do I get more Google reviews without breaking the rules?

Ask every customer, at the moment the job is finished, with a direct link. Make it routine. Reply to each review. Do not buy reviews, do not offer a discount or gift in exchange, and do not ask only the customers you expect to be positive. All three are against Google’s review policies.

How many Google reviews do I need?

There is no fixed number. Look at the businesses in the Map Pack for your main search and aim to be competitive with them in count and recency. A steady trickle over a year looks more natural than fifty in a week.

Should I reply to negative reviews?

Yes. Briefly, calmly, without arguing or revealing private details, and with an offer to put it right offline. Future customers read the reply as carefully as the complaint.

Websites and technical SEO

What a site needs to be found, and what the jargon means.

Do I need a website for local SEO if I have a Google profile?

Yes, for two reasons. Google reads your website to confirm the name, services and location on your profile. And a profile alone gives customers nowhere to compare services, see detail or book outside Google. Read Google Business Profile vs website SEO.

What is an SEO website?

A website planned around how people search before it is designed: one page per service, clear titles and headings, fast mobile pages, clean URLs, schema markup and sensible internal links. Our SEO website design service builds this from the start.

What is technical SEO?

Technical SEO is everything that lets search engines crawl, render and index a site: sitemap, robots.txt, canonical URLs, HTTPS, mobile usability, page speed and structured data. It decides whether your content can rank at all. See what we handle.

Can you optimize an existing website?

Yes. We audit it, rewrite the on-page SEO, fix speed and mobile issues, add schema and build missing pages. Details are under already have a website.

Do you provide Google Search Console setup?

Yes. We verify the property in your own Google account, submit the sitemap and check indexing. It is included in the website plan and the bundle. See Search Console setup.

Do you create service pages?

Yes. Each service you want to be found for gets its own page in the website plan, because a single “Services” page with bullet points gives Google very little to rank.

Do you create location pages?

Yes, in the bundle, and only where they are justified. A location page has to say something real about your work in that place. We do not mass-produce near-identical city pages, because Google treats those as doorway pages.

What is schema markup, and does a small business need it?

Schema is structured code that states what your business is, where it operates and what it offers in a form machines read without guessing. It will not push a page up the rankings by itself, but it helps search engines and AI systems describe you accurately.

Does website speed affect ranking?

It is a real signal, though a modest one. The bigger cost is commercial: visitors leave before a slow page finishes loading, so you lose the traffic you already earned.

How do I get my business mentioned by AI assistants?

AI systems draw on the same public information as search engines: a complete, verified profile, a website that states plainly what you do and where, structured data, consistent details across the web and real reviews. Nobody can guarantee a mention. Being clear, consistent and easy to quote is what you can control.

Cost and timing

Numbers, not ranges hidden behind a discovery call.

How long does local SEO take?

Profile changes usually show within days and ranking movement typically begins between two and six weeks. Website rankings commonly take one to three months because Google has to crawl, index and build trust in new pages. Competitive cities take longer. See how long local SEO takes.

What does local SEO cost?

Agencies commonly quote $500 to $2,000 a month, often on a contract. Freelancers charge per task. We charge once: $499 for Google Business Profile ranking, $499 for an SEO website with domain and hosting for the first year, or $947 for both, each with 90 days of optimization. Compare the options in our local SEO pricing guide or go to pricing.

Do I have to keep paying for SEO forever?

No. The foundation work is done once. What follows is upkeep: keeping details current, posting occasionally and collecting reviews. Ongoing paid work can make sense in very competitive markets, but it should not be the default.
