Google Business Profile vs Website SEO: Do You Need Both?
What each one does, where it shows up and which to fix first.
Key takeaways
- The profile appears in Maps and the Map Pack. The website appears in the ordinary results.
- Google uses the website to confirm what the profile says.
- If you can only do one first, start with the profile.
- For most local businesses the answer is both, built to match.
Owners often ask which matters more. It is the wrong question, but a useful one to work through, because the two do different jobs in different parts of the same results page.
Where each one appears
Search for a local service and Google usually shows, from top to bottom: ads, the Map Pack with a map and a few business listings, and then the ordinary organic results.
Your Google Business Profile is what appears in the Map Pack and inside Google Maps. Your website is what appears in the organic results. A business with both done well can appear twice on one page.
What each one does
| Google Business Profile | Website SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Appears in | Google Maps and the Map Pack | Ordinary search results |
| Best for | “Near me” and urgent searches | Research, comparison and specific services |
| Main signals | Category, proximity, reviews, completeness | Content, structure, links, speed |
| Time to effect | Often weeks | Often one to three months |
| Who controls it | You, inside Google’s format and rules | You, entirely |
| Customer action | Call, directions, visit website | Read, compare, enquire, book |
How they depend on each other
Google does not treat them separately. It reads your website to check the name, address, phone number and services on your profile. A profile linked to a site that says the same things is more credible than a profile linked to nothing, or to a page that contradicts it.
It also works the other way. Google says prominence, one of its three local ranking factors, takes into account a business’s position in ordinary web results (Google’s guidance). A website that ranks well helps the profile.
Can you manage with only a profile?
For a while, in an uncompetitive area, sometimes. But you give up a lot:
- no organic results, so half the page belongs to someone else
- nowhere to explain services, prices or process in detail
- no pages for the nearby places you serve
- nothing you fully own. A profile lives on Google’s platform and under Google’s rules.
Google used to offer a free basic website made from the profile. It shut that feature down in 2024, so a profile no longer comes with any site at all.
Can you manage with only a website?
Not for local customers. Without a verified profile you cannot appear in the Map Pack or in Maps, which is where urgent, nearby searches are decided.
Which to do first
If you have neither, start with the profile. It is free, quicker to take effect and puts you on the map. Our profile optimization guide takes you through it.
Then build the website, or fix the one you have, so that it confirms the profile and gives each service a page. See SEO website vs normal website for what that involves.
Making them match
- The same business name, address and phone number, character for character
- The same services, with a page on the site for each service listed on the profile
- The same opening hours
- The profile linking to the site, and the site linking to or embedding the profile’s map
- Schema markup on the site stating the same details in machine-readable form
The practical answer
For nearly every local business, the answer is both, built to agree with each other. That is the reasoning behind our bundle: Google Business Profile ranking and an SEO website done together for $947, each cross-checked against the other. The pricing page shows what each part includes.
Quick answers
Is a Google Business Profile enough without a website?
It can work for a time in a quiet market, but you lose the ordinary search results, detailed service pages and a platform you fully control.
Does my website affect my Google Maps ranking?
Yes. Google uses the website to confirm profile details, and a site that ranks well in ordinary results contributes to prominence.
Which should I set up first?
The Google Business Profile. It is free, takes effect faster and is required to appear in Maps at all.
