Google Maps ranking service
Google Maps SEO Service
Google Maps SEO is the work of making your business show up, and get chosen, when someone nearby searches Google Maps or sees the local Map Pack in ordinary search.
It is delivered through our Google Business Profile Ranking plan: $499 one-time, with 90 days of optimization.

Where Google Maps results appear
One profile feeds all three. Improving it improves your chances in each.
The local Map Pack
The block of map results, usually three, that appears above the ordinary results for a local search. It is the most visible local placement on Google.
The Google Maps app
Searches made inside Maps on a phone or in a car. The same profile is ranked, but people here are usually ready to call or travel.
The full local list
The longer list behind “More places”. Fewer people reach it, but it is where a listing climbs from before it reaches the pack.
How Google Maps ranking works
Google states that local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence (Google’s explanation). Here is what each means for a real business.
Relevance: does the listing match the search?
This is decided by your categories, services, description and the page your profile links to. A roofer whose primary category is “Contractor” is less relevant for “roof repair” than one listed as a roofing contractor with roof repair as a named service. Relevance is the factor you have most control over, and it is where Google Business Profile optimization does most of its work.
Distance: how far away are you?
Google works out distance from the searcher’s location, or from the place named in the search. You cannot move your premises, so the job here is accuracy: the right address or service areas, and no attempt to fake a location. Virtual offices and borrowed addresses are a common cause of suspension.
Prominence: how well known is the business?
Google looks at reviews, mentions and links across the web, and how well your website does in ordinary results. This is where consistent citations, a steady review routine and a website built for search feed back into your Maps visibility.
Why “near me” is not a keyword to stuff
A “near me” search tells Google to weigh distance heavily and find the most relevant open business nearby. Writing “near me” on your pages does little. Being accurately located, clearly described and open when you say you are does a lot. More in our guide to ranking for near me searches.
What Google Maps SEO can and cannot change
We would rather you knew this before paying than after.
What we can influence
- How precisely your categories and services match searches
- How complete and current the profile is
- Whether your details agree across the web
- How many customers are asked for a review, and how you reply
- Whether your website confirms your services and areas
- How correctly a service-area business is set up
What nobody can control
- Where the searcher is standing
- How strong or how close your competitors are
- Changes Google makes to its ranking systems or layout
- Whether a competitor breaks the rules, although spam can be reported
- The exact position on any given search
The work behind a Google Maps ranking
The same services described on our local SEO services page, applied to one goal: more calls and direction requests from Maps.
Google Business Profile SEO
The profile is what Google shows in Maps and the Map Pack, so every field is filled in accurately and on purpose.

More on landing pagesHow we measure Google Maps results
Two people in the same town can see different results for the same search, so one rank number tells you very little. We report on what the listing actually produces:
- Calls made from the profile
- Direction requests
- Website clicks from the listing
- The searches that showed your business, and how they change over the 90 days
All of it comes from the free performance data in your own Google Business Profile, so you can keep checking it after we finish. On the bundle, you also get a monthly ranking report during the 90 days.
- Storefronts. Address shown, hours accurate, photos of the premises so customers recognize it.
- Service-area businesses. Address hidden, realistic service areas, pages on the website for the main places served.
- Hybrid businesses. A shop that also delivers or visits customers shows both, set up as Google describes.
Google Maps SEO: common questions
Why do I rank well near my premises but not across town?
Because distance is one of Google’s three local ranking factors. Results are calculated from where the searcher is, so your visibility fades as they get further from you and closer to a competitor. Strong relevance and prominence widen the area you show up in, but they do not remove the effect.
Can I rank on Google Maps in a city where I have no address?
Rarely in the Map Pack. The practical route is ordinary search results: a real page on your website for each place you serve, with content that is specific to that area. Our location pages are built that way, and only where there is something true and useful to say.
Should I add keywords or my city to my business name?
No, unless they are part of your real, registered trading name. It is against Google’s guidelines, competitors can report it, and it can get a profile suspended. We never do it.
How do I track Google Maps performance?
Use the performance data inside your Google Business Profile: calls, direction requests, website clicks and the searches that showed your listing. A single “rank” number is misleading because results change with the searcher’s location.
How long does Google Maps SEO take?
Profile changes usually appear within days, and movement typically begins between two and six weeks. Competitive categories take longer. See how long local SEO takes for what affects the timeline.
Is Google Maps SEO a separate product?
No. It is what our Google Business Profile Ranking plan delivers, for $499 one-time. The bundle adds a website, which strengthens the same result from the other side.
